Kicking up a Storm!

With the Champions League final looming, we thought that this week we would amuse you with some fantastic facts surrounding the wonderful world of football!

* The team to have won the Champions League the most times is Real Madrid, with a staggering 9 wins, although Italy, Spain and England are all sharing top spot in the tables for country with the most wins – each having at least 11 wins under their belt!

* Real Madrid were the first team to ever win the Champions League, way back in 1956 and they retained the title for 5 years before being beaten by SL Benfica in 1961.

* Liverpool have won the Champions League the most times out of all English teams!

* The Champions League table for all games played, (yes, you’ve guessed it…) Real Madrid is at the top, with Manchester United trailing them by just 2 points!

Here are a few of the more bizarre football facts – we hope they entertain you!

* In 1921, a grand total of 13 people turned up to watch Stockport County v Leicester!

* During a Carlisle v Rochdale game in 1954, 3 different Carlisle players scored own goals!

* In 1975, an international match between Chile & Uruguay was abandoned after an incredible 19 players were sent off!

* A massive 300 games were postponed in the 1962/63 season, due to bad weather!

* The most injured player of all time is Denis Smith of Stoke City. Denis had the great misfortune of having broken his legs 5 times, his nose broken 4 times, a broken collar bone, cracked ankle, chipped spine, over 100 stitches at various times and most of his fingers and toes were broken! Now that has to hurt!

* In the late 1950s Lincoln City Football Club had a centre half named Ray LONG who was over 6 foot tall and a left winger called David SHORT, who was only 5ft 4.
